How to
Submit Your Website to the Search Engines/Directories
You or your webmaster are capable of submitting
your website to search engines/directories on the internet.
Step 1:
Make sure that you have the proper meta-tags inserted into your index
page. The proper syntax is as follows between the opening <HEAD> and
closing <HEAD> in the index page (index.htm or index.html) of
your html:
Use our
Keyword / Generator to create your metatags already formatted for you !
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE> Name of your Company - Few Descriptive Keywords describing your
services or website page - this will show at the top Title bar of your browser </TITLE>
<meta name="description" content="short description of your website
and/or services that you provide - it should be less than 125 words - this will
be used by many search engines to describe the content of your website">
<meta name="keywords" content="type in approximately 25 keywords/phrases
that surfers are likely to search for your website under - remember the more
general the keyword/phrase is, the less likely your website will show up as top
listing in the search engines/directory - separate each keyword/phrase with
commas, like this, and this, etc">
</HEAD>
Many search engines use these basic metatags
(Title, Description, Keywords) when they are going to index your website in the
search engine/directory.
If you don't include these basic metatags, you
may not get a very high position in the search engine/listing.
Step 2:
Here is a list of the most popular Search Engines/Directories that surfers use
to search for websites
Altavista,
Excite, GO
(Infoseek), HotBot, Lycos,
Webcrawler, MSN
Search, Google, Yahoo,
Snap and
AOL
Each
search engine/directory has it's own instructions and submission
techniques. If you choose to do your own search engine submission, it is
your responsibility to read and follow their instructions.
It
is always a good idea to periodically resubmit yourself to the search
engines/directories (approximately 1/month) or whenever you make major changes
to your website, to ensure that you do not lose your positioning and to ensure
that your listing is maintained in each search engine/directory.
Regularly submit yourself to the
search engines. Make sure that your website is listed in at least the most
popular search engines, which include: Altavista,
Excite, GO
(Infoseek), HotBot,
Lycos, Webcrawler,
MSN Search, Google,
Yahoo, Snap and AOL.
As part of your hosting services,
InterCape Online submits provides a complimentary monthly search engine
submission of your home page to the most popular search engines. This
service is helps you get your foot in the door with the search engines and
ensures that you are submitted at least 1x month, but it does not guarantee that
your site will be listed in any/all of the search engines.
To increase your chances of
better search engine standing, it is best to periodically submit yourself to the
search engines. You may submit as many pages as you like (refer to each search
engines submission policies), but it is recommended that you submit at least
your home page and a site map.
- Home Page Content: make sure that you
somehow integrate lots of keywords into your home page and also include links
that lead to other parts of your website - this is good bait for search engine
spiders
- Site Map: include a sitemap so it is easy
to find all of the pages of your website or least the major pages (if your
website is extremely large). Then submit your site map to the search
engines and the search engine spiders will crawl through your whole website.
Also Site Maps can make your website more user friendly because it will be
easier to find what they are specifically looking for
