WEBSITE PROMOTION TIPS:
Your website is a POWERFUL promotional tool that can convey detailed information
about your products and services, is a method for potential global customers to
purchase products/services directly from you at your customer's convenience, and
a way to interact and provide top notch customer support to your
customers.
Take advantage of all the
Internet has to offer...think of how much more information you can offer in your
website than you can in a 30 second radio/tv advertisement or a printed ad. Your
website is available to the EVERYONE that is connected to the Internet -
therefore, you are not only potentially reaching just your local community, but
the global community! The Internet offers your visitors convenience and
information at their fingertips that they can peruse and purchase at their
leisure. But, before you can take advantage of all the Internet has to offer,
you must implement a few steps basic website promotion techniques.
The quote "If you build it, they will
come" rings true in the movie "Field of Dreams", but
unfortunately, it is not true in the vast World Wide Web. On the Internet, if
you build a website, then you MUST promote the website, then they will come.
Web Site Promotion is a full-time job in
itself, but here are a few techniques that will help you promote your website.
Off-Line Promotion:
1. Make sure that your website address is displayed on ALL of your marketing and
stationary materials. This includes: business cards, stationary, product labels,
menus, signs, kiosks, billboards, printed advertisements, radio ads, yellow page
ads, newspaper articles, press releases, bags, and promotional items like
pens/mugs, etc.
2. If you have signage on the
side of your vans or trucks, be sure to have your web site address listed.
Imagine sitting at a traffic light behind a van with their name, phone number
and website address - which are you most likely to remember...
3. Make sure that all of your employees know
your website address like they know the name, phone number and address of the
business.
4. Write Press Releases to radio, cable,
newspaper media announcing your new website or newest product launch. Click
here to see a list of some Cape Cod media resources.
5. Join industry and local groups like your
local Chambers of Commerce. In the membership listing, be
sure to add your url and email to your contact information.
On-Line Promotion:
1. Search Engines / Directories: Regularly submit yourself to the search engines. Make
sure that your website is listed in at least the most popular search engines,
which include: Altavista, Excite,
GO (Infoseek), HotBot,
Lycos, Webcrawler,
MSN Search, Google,
Yahoo, Snap and AOL.
As part of your hosting
services, InterCape Online submits provides a complimentary monthly search
engine submission of your home page to the most popular search engines.
This service is helps you get your foot in the door with the search engines and
ensures that you are submitted at least 1x month, but it does not guarantee that
your site will be listed in any/all of the search engines.
To increase your chances of
better search engine standing, it is best to periodically submit yourself to the
search engines. You may submit as many pages as you like (refer to each search
engines submission policies), but it is recommended that you submit at least
your home page and a site map.
2. Home Page Content: make sure that you
somehow integrate lots of keywords into your home page and also include links
that lead to other parts of your website - this is good bait for search engine
spiders
3. Site Map: include a sitemap so it is easy
to find all of the pages of your website or least the major pages (if your
website is extremely large). Then submit your site map to the search
engines and the search engine spiders will crawl through your whole
website. Also Site Maps can make your website more user friendly because
it will be easier to find what they are specifically looking for
4. Use a search engine optimization &
submission software. Be very careful when choosing these programs - be
sure to demo the program before purchasing it. There are many out there
that claim to submit you to 40,000 search engines but they are really mostly
submitting you to useless and temporary Free For All (FFA) sites. The
really important sites to be listed in are the most popular websites ( Altavista, Excite,
GO (Infoseek), HotBot,
Lycos, Webcrawler,
MSN Search, Google,
Yahoo, Snap and AOL.)
WebPosition - a search engine optimization
& submission software that is widely used by both web site owners and web
professionals. they have a free download - try it and see if it will help
you - http://www.webposition.com
5. Reciprocal Links: whenever
possible, if someone is referring to your website or using images, scripts or
materials from your site, request that they put a reciprocal link to your
website.
6. Share your Expertise: Join in
newsgroups and offer your expertise at Expert Web Sites like askme.com. If
customers see that your feedback is credible, they will feel more comfortable
using and referring your services/products.
7. E-Mail Signatures: Be sure to use
an email signature. An E-Mail signature is a short text file that is
automatically inserted into any new email message you compose. It is
traditionally a short piece of information that may include your name, company,
contact and/or brief company details.
8. Whenever possible, get yourself listed in
Industry-Related or Community-Oriented Search Engines and Directories.
9. Banner Ad Advertising/Exchanges.
10. Start your own Mailing List - In a
mailing list, everyone's input will be sent to everyone's name that is
subscribed in that mailing list.
11. Use Auto-Responders to
automatically respond to potential customers and to provide additional
information / articles that people may be interested about. If you would
like to see how an auto-responder works, send a blank email to: autoresponderdemo@intercape.com
12. Recruit your customers to help to promote
your business with Affiliate or Partner Programs.
13. WebRings - a free service offered
on the Internet that arranges sites with similar content by linking them
together in a circle or ring.
14. Sponsor Internet Specials or Coupons
or Contests to bring traffic to your website. This is a good way to
drive traffic to your website and also have a way to follow-up with future
business specials.
ETIQUETTE TIP: whenever you followup
with a potential customer via email, always briefly explain how you got their
name so they don't mistaken you as a Spammer. Also provide a way for the
customer to be removed from your mailing list.
15. Make your Website Content FRESH,
USEFUL, MEMORABLE, INTERACTIVE, INFORMATIVE so that people will have a
reason to return to your website and refer other people to visit your
website.
The common denominator of web site promotion
is to get your site listed in as many places as possible on the Internet. The
more often that your website address is listed, the more likely people will be
to visit your website and the more sales you will be able to generate.
