Mac OS 9 Set-Up Procedure


Section 1. System Set-Up

  1. From the desktop, double-click on the Hard Drive icon.
  2. From the Hard Drive window, double-click on the Assistants icon to open this folder.
  3. In the Assistants window, double-click on the Internet Setup Assistant icon. This will bring up the Internet Setup Assistant window.

  4. Internet Access window

At the "Would you like to setup your computer to use the Internet?" prompt, select Yes.

At the "Do you already have an Internet account?" prompt, select Yes.

  1. Introduction window

Click the right arrow to continue to the next window.

  1. Configuration Name and Connection Type window

At the "What would you like to name this configuration?" prompt, type in intercape

At the "How will you be connecting to the Internet?" prompt, click on the Modem radio button. Click the right arrow to continue.

  1. Modem Settings window

Select your modem from the drop down menu at the "Which modem are you using?" prompt. If you do not know this information, refer to your Macintosh owner's manual to find out what modem is installed on your system.

Select Internet Modem from the drop down menu at the "Which port is the modem connected to?" prompt and click on the Tone radio button at the "Does your phone line use tone or pulse?" prompt. Click the right arrow to continue.

 

  1. Configuration Information window

An access number must be entered into the field labeled "What is the access telephone number for this configuration?". If you are located in Cape Cod, MA, choose one of the following access numbers:

508-437-5599 Barnstable
508-445-5599 Cataumet
508-632-5599 Harwich
508-355-5599 Marion
508-374-5599 Nantucket
508-629-5599 Vineyard Haven
508-664-5599 Wellfleet

to determine your local dialup number if you are located outside of Cape Cod, MA.


If calling from MA, be sure to enter all 10 digits as the area code is required
to make all calls. 

It is the customer's responsibility to determine if the dial-up number is a local or long-distance call. If neither of these numbers are local access, please contact InterCape

In the field labeled "What name do you use with this service (also known as your log-in name or user ID)?", type in your InterCape-assigned login username (all lowercase).  Username/Login Name looks similar to this: username@intercape.com

In the field labeled "What is your password?", type in your InterCape assigned password – NOTE: passwords are case-sensitive. Click the right arrow to continue.

Username/Login Name/Password information can be found on your Internet Access Connection Letter that was sent to you.

  1. PPP Connect Scripts window

At the "Does your ISP require that you use a PPP Connect Script when you log in?" prompt, click on the No radio button. Click the right arrow to continue.

  1. IP Address window

Select the No radio button at the "Is there an IP address for this configuration?" prompt. Click the right arrow to continue.

  1. Domain Name Servers window

In the area labeled "What is the DNS address (or addresses) for this configuration?"
LEAVE THIS BLANK because it is server assigned DNS

In the field labeled "What is the Domain Name (or host name) for this configuration?"  LEAVE THIS BLANK

Click the right arrow to continue.

  1. E-mail Address and Password window

In the field labeled "What is the e-mail address for this configuration?", type in your InterCape-assigned email address.  Your email address will  look similar to this: email@intercape.com.  Very often, your login name will be the same as your primary email address.

In the field labeled "What is the e-mail password for this configuration?", type in the password assigned to that InterCape e-mail account - NOTE: passwords are case-sensitive.

Click the right arrow to continue.

  1. E-mail Account and Host Computer window

In the field labeled "What is the e-mail account for the configuration?", Your email account will be the same as your email address and  will  look similar to this: email@intercape.com.  

In the field labeled "What is the e-mail host for the configuration?", type in: mail.intercape.com

Click the right arrow to continue.

  1. Newsgroup Host Computer window

In the field labeled "What is the Newsgroup host for this configuration. LEAVE THIS BLANK

Click the right arrow to continue.

  1. Proxies window

Select the No radio button at the "Do you use proxy servers for Internet connections?" prompt. Click the right arrow to continue.

  1. Conclusion window

Select the Go ahead button to finish the Internet Setup Assistant procedure.

Section 2. Connecting to the Internet

You are now ready to connect to the Internet using InterCape network. There are several ways to accomplish this.

  1. Open an Internet application such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. Once the application comes up, it will automatically start the dial-up process using the Remote Access software.
  2. From the Apple menu, click on the Control Panel. From the Control Panel, click on Remote Access. In the Remote Access window, select Connect.
  3. From the Apple menu, select Remote Access Status and then Connect.
