Bytes, Kilobytes, Megabytes, Gigabytes explained...

1 Byte = the amount of computer memory stored in one ASCII character.
Example:
the letter A=1 byte and
the word INTERNET=8 bytes
the phrase INTERCAPE ONLINE=16 bytes

Byte = B
Kilobyte = K or KB
Megabyte = M or MB
Gigabyte = G or GB or Gig

Here is a conversion chart to show you how they all work together (exact calculations are shown in the parenthesis)

8 bits = 1 B
1,000 B
(1,024 B)
1 KB
10,000 B 10 KB
100,000 B 100 KB
1,000,000 B
(1,048,576 B)
1,000 KB 1 MB
10,000,000 B 10,000 KB 10 MB
100,000,000 B 100,000 KB 100 MB
1,000,000,000 B
(1,073,741,824 B)
1,000,000 KB 1,000 MB 1 G
1,000,000,000,000 B 1,000,000,000 KB 1,000,000 MB 1,000 G 1 Terabyte

Computer memory (RAM), storage space, and application and document sizes are measured in KBs or MBs.

Real Life Examples: (click here for the full web site...)

10 B = A Word, like CALCULATOR

5 KB = Average Page of Text with 5000 characters/bytes

10 KB = An enclopaedic page

100 KB = Low-Resolution (note: if you click on this, you will see a large low resolution picture that takes the following amount of time to download: 53 sec on 28.8 / 27 sec on 56.6 / 11 sec ISDN / 0 sec on T1/T3 - you don't have to wait and view this image unless you want to...)

1 MB = 1 Small Novel or 3.5 inch floppy disk

100 MB =  A Two-Volume encyclopaedic book OR 1 Meter of shelved books
